California gold country, 1856. With the creek diggings played out, young prospector John Winston and his partner Cole take the high road over the mountain toward richer ground. On the switchbacks they talk like men who expect to be friends for years, while a single low tone hums beneath everything. Then Cole is simply gone. Alone in an abandoned camp, John sinks into a fever-dream night in a wagon-wheel chair, and wakes to a dawn wood in milk-grey fog, a still stream, and a black goat that will not stop watching him.
